The Society of Critical Care Medicine (SCCM) Taskforce for Pediatric Sepsis Definition convened in 2019, seeking a new data-driven approach to diagnosing sepsis utilizing an 8-organ system clinical criteria approach (Sanchez-Pinto et al., 2024).

After re-convening in 2024, the “stacked model” 8-organ system model transitioned to a 4-organ system model, including clinical criteria in respiratory, cardiovascular, coagulation, and neurologic systems (Sanchez-Pinto et al., 2024). With the development of the 4-organ system model clinical criteria, the Phoenix Criteria and Phoenix Sepsis Scoring system was born.

This new Phoenix Criteria scoring system has significant implications for use in the inpatient setting through initiatives and implementation in diagnosing sepsis in pediatric patients. Several impact considerations exist, particularly in clinical documentation integrity and coding. Join us as we explore the complexities of this topic.
